This paper will demonstrate the importance of windshield wipers as an important American invention. Both Windshield Wipers and later the functionality of time delayed, or intermittent, windshield wipers were both American inventions as research will demonstrate.
Using primary and secondary sources, the genesis of this invention will be shared including antecedents and the progression and implementation of the technology. It’s impact on automobile and other vehicle safety. Patent paperwork and court proceedings, especially in regards to intermittent windshield wipers, are examples of primary sources that would be key to the research; while scholarly work done on the history of automobiles, automobile safety and road safety
This paper will also depict the antecedents and alternatives of windshield wipers and their effectiveness in performing that task compared to windshield wipers. This background will explain the impetus which led to the new inventions creation. The aftermath of the inventions, again particularly the intermittent wipers resulted in a lengthy and a arduous court battle between the inventor and car manufacturers, and their impact on vehicles particularly in the realm of vehicle safety and society in general.
